This course is designed to develop students’ skills of Chinese beyond an intermediate level of competence. The focus is on reading, writing, speaking and listening competencies, with guided study using ICT and web-based materials. In addition to further consolidating and enhancing skills that students have acquired in reading, writing, speaking and listening, the course aims to develop students’ communication skills in written and spoken Chinese to a higher-intermediate level. Students are expected to complete assignments and examinations aided partially by digital device.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar.
2) make regular interaction with native speakers of Chinese with a degree of fluency and spontaneity.
3) present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest.
4) understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar subjects regularly encountered during school and leisure time
etc.
5) describe experiences and events; briefly giving reasons and explanations for plans.
6) employ basic business-related vocabulary to describe business interests, business invitations and career plans.
7) understand contemporary literary prose.
8) write an essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view.

Upon satisfactory completion, students are deemed to have a good grasp of the key linguistic elements of HSK level 4.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered in small-sized class and students’ learning will be guided using digital tools for maximized efficiency. The module will be taught mainly in Chinese.

 Grammar-translation
Learning is largely by translation to and from the target language. Students are expected to memorize grammar rules or vocabulary by developing translation skills.
 Peer and group work
Students are expected to work in small groups. Students are encouraged to help and correct each other in a cooperative spirit. Teachers will provide help when it is absolutely necessary.
 Critical writing and reflective learning.
