CHN30090 Advanced Intensive Chinese II

Academic Year 2023/2024

This course builds on the vocabulary and range of language structures learned at the advanced level, thus equipping students with the linguistic tools to enable them to communicate effectively in work and social situations. This course further develops students' ability of comprehensive and communicative ability. The course aims to deepen students' understanding and appreciation of the culture, history, society, economy, geography and customs of the regions/countries in which the language is spoken and to develop student awareness of the general social and cultural background of the language. This course further trains students' ability in writing and lexical accuracy.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Communicate with a high degree of fluency and accuracy in discussing or debating topics in a considerable range of contexts.
2. Communicate in more advanced and complicated linguistic form.
3. Further understand and use idiom, folk adage and rhetoric.
4. Further develop writing skills and authentic expressions in the target language.

The key teaching and learning approaches of the course include lectures, active/task-based learning, lectures, critical writing, topic-based debates and student presentation. 
Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

In order to take this module, students need to have prior knowledge which is equivalent to HSK Level 5.

Learning Exclusions:

Students who are native Mandarin speakers are not eligible to take this module as an elective.

The lecturer reserves the right to assess the language competence of all students. Students whose competence is incompatible with the level of their chosen elective module will be advised to transfer to a more appropriate language module.
