CHN30020 Business Chinese II

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module is aimed to further enhance students' spoken and written language skills in a business context and to promote their awareness about business environment and culture in contemporary China. The materials used for this module are developed from real business cases of multinational companies in China. In addition to the textbook, students will read selected business articles in Chinese, as well as translate selected English business articles on extensive topics to Chinese.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1) Access business news and articles in Chinese on extensive topics.
2) Demonstrate deepened understanding of business environment in contemporary China.
3) Gain vocabulary and fluency in Chinese to function in a business context, such as business negotiation.
4) Demonstrate presentation skills on business topics, supported by charts and data.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The forms of classes include lectures, drills on vocabulary and sentence patterns, and discussions. The module will be taught in Chinese. 
Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

In order to take this module, students need to have prior knowledge which is equivalent to HSK Level 4.

Learning Exclusions:

Students who are native Mandarin speakers are not eligible to take this module as an elective.

The lecturer reserves the right to assess the language competence of all students. Students whose competence is incompatible with the level of their chosen elective module will be advised to transfer to a more appropriate language module.
