CHN20070 Int. Written Chinese IV

This course is designed to develop students’ skills of Chinese beyond an intermediate level of competence. The focus is on reading and writing competencies, with guided study using ICT and web-based materials. In addition to further consolidating and enhancing skills that students have acquired in reading and writing, the course aims to develop students’ communication skills in written Chinese to a higher-intermediate level. Students are expected to complete assignments and examinations aided partially by digital device.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) understand, with ease, extended speech and lectures on familiar topics.
2) understand contemporary literary prose.
3) write an essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view.
Upon satisfactory completion, students are deemed to have a good grasp of the key linguistic elements of HSK level 4.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered in small-sized class and students’ learning will be guided using digital tools for maximized efficiency. The module will be taught mainly in Chinese.

 Grammar-translation
Learning is largely by translation to and from the target language. Students are expected to memorize grammar rules or vocabulary by developing translation skills.
 Peer and group work
Students are expected to work in small groups. Students are encouraged to help and correct each other in a cooperative spirit. Teachers will assist when it is absolutely necessary.
 Critical writing and reflective learning.

Learning Requirements:

For this module, the completion of CHN20040 is required.

Learning Exclusions:

Students who are native Mandarin speakers are not eligible to take this module as an elective. The lecturer reserves the right to assess the language competence of all students. Students whose competence is incompatible with the level of their chosen elective module will be advised to transfer to a more appropriate language module.
