On successful completion of the course, students will:
- Recognise up to 300 Chinese characters, which are selected from the 2021 “Chinese Language Proficiency Standard for International Chinese Education.”
- Be able to write about 100 essential characters.
- Develop an understanding of the history and evolution of Chinese characters, including their origin and development over time.
- Recognise the form and structure of Chinese characters, including their various components and strokes.
- Understand the cultural significance conveyed through Chinese characters, including how they reflect and shape Chinese culture and identity.
- Gain knowledge and skills for learning Chinese characters effectively, including memorisation techniques and strategies for practice and application.
- Develop the ability to recognise and interpret common Chinese characters in written texts, such as signs, labels, and basic sentences.
¨ Week 1 – Week 4
1. The historical development of Chinese characters and their evolution in form and structure
2. Methods for constructing Chinese characters, including the Four Categories, with examples
3. The simplification of Chinese characters and the differences between traditional and simplified characters
4. The relationship between Chinese characters and Chinese words, and how to distinguish them
5. The difference between integral characters (characters that stand alone as a word) and compound characters (characters that combine to form a word)
6. An introduction to the basic strokes used in Chinese characters, including the order of writing
7. The structure of Chinese characters
8. The concept of radicals and their importance in understanding Chinese characters
9. Effective techniques for memorizing Chinese characters
¨ Week 5 – Week 12
1. In-depth study of approximately 40 Chinese radicals
2. Recognition and understanding of approximately 300 commonly used Chinese characters (selected from the 2021 “Chinese Language Proficiency Standard for International Chinese Education”)
3. In-depth study of vocabulary related to the aforementioned Chinese characters
