Understanding a written text requires not only language proficiency but also a profound knowledge of the historical, social, and cultural context in which the text itself was produced and circulated. This course helps students in gaining the basic tools to interpret written Chinese literature texts.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Through in class lectures, assigned secondary scholarship readings, translation exercises, class discussion, and independent research assignments, students will gain an introductory understanding of cultural debates within modern China. Primary texts will be provided in Chinese, allowing students to will expand their vocabulary and the command of Chinese grammar.
