CHN10120 China on Film

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module aims to present China through the most straightforward method to students who are interested in different aspects of the country’s history, language, politics and society. Through the lens of Chinese and international directors, vivid images of the Chinese society throughout its contemporary history will guide students’ understanding of 6 key topics. Fiction films and documentaries are main learning materials along with literature on multiple topics on China. Students will attend screening sessions and lectures as well as actively participate in discussions of seminars and tutorials.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should:

• Have a comprehensive understanding of the development of Chinese cinema and how changes in Chinese politics and society are reflected in films and documentaries.
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of key topics covered in the module.
• Present extensive knowledge on sub-topics based on literature review and tutorials.
• Present a comparative view from different angles and cultural contexts on topics covered in this module.

• Breadwinner and Home-maker - Modern Chinese Women
• Falling leaves return to the root - Chinese overseas
• Roll up our sleeves and work hard! – The education system and work ethics in China
• Family – generations and families in China
