CHEN40760 Research Methods in CBE

Academic Year 2021/2022

This module will addresses techniques and strategies of relevance to Chemical & Bioprocess Engineers, preparing for a research project. One of the primary outcomes of this module is the completion of a Literature Review in a specified research topic

The follow topic areas will be addressed

1. Principles of critical review of prior research, including information mining using resources available at UCD (hard-copy, as well as electronic resources), as well as other sources;
2. Safety, Health and the Environment (SHE) and Ethical appraisals in of scientific/applied research;
3. Statistical Analysis and Design of Experiments;
4. Best practices in written presentation.

70% of the module's grade is associated with a Literature Review, typically on a topic directly related to the Research Project (e.g. CHEN40590) which the student will normally later in the same academic year.

Students should note that a non-standard mark-to-grade conversion systems in used in this module for A grades only, in that A- corresponds to 70-79.99 %, an A grade to 80-89.99 %, whilst an A+ is earned for a mark of 90-100 %.
