CHEN40090 Bioprocessing Laboratory

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module will provide student with an overview of the commercial production of biopharmaceuticals in a GMP facility. Students will also gain understanding of the processes involved in both upstream (cell culture and growth in bioreactor) and downstream (harvest to fill-finish) production of biopharmaceuticals.

A non-standard mark-to-grade conversion system is used in this module for grades of C- and above (i.e. C-: 50.00-54.99; C: 55.00-59.99; C+: 60.00-64.99; B-: 65.00-69.99; B: 70.00-74.99; B+: 75.00-79.99; A-: 80.00-84.99; A: 85.00-89.99; A+:90.00-100.00).

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Describe the general layout of an industrial biopharmaceutical facility
2. To identify the utilities and equipment required for production of biopharmaceuticals.
3. Describe the cleaning-in-place (CIP) and steam-in-place (SIP) protocols for setting up a stainless-steel bioreactor.
4. Measure the growth and viability of CHO cells manually and using an automated cell counter.
5. Measure the rate of glucose and lactate metabolism in CHO cells in culture.
6. Understand the steps involved in downstream processing of biopharmaceuticals in particular ultrafiltration and centrifugation.
7. Understand the steps involved in packing a large-scale chromatography unit.
