Curricular information is subject to change.

To be familiar with and understand the need for environmental legislation governing industrial processes and discharges.
To apply engineering principles to the design and specification of pollution control processes and to use quantitative methods to understand the impact of anthropogenic activity on the environment.
To be familiar with and understand the importance of incorporating sustainability into the design and operation of Chemical and Bioprocessing plants.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able:
1. To explain the nature and causes of pollution and to discuss regulations governing pollution in Ireland and the European Union.
2. To show a detailed understanding of the design methodologies for selected physical, chemical and biological abatement technologies for effluent streams of relevance to the chemical and allied industries and to recommend effective treatment processes for such effluents.
3. To apply quantitative principles to determine the impact of pollution in selected systems e.g. Streeter-Phelps model for oxygen depletion in rivers and streams
4. To demonstrate an appreciation for the planning process and the environmental licensing of major industrial and municipal developments.
5. To demonstrate how incorporating sustainability into the design and evaluation of chemical and biological processes can reduce environmental impacts and improve process outcomes.
