To be familiar with and under stand the need for environmental legislation. To apply engineering principles to the design and specification of pollution control processes and to use quantitative methods to understand the impact of anthropogenic activity on the environment.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able:1. To explain the nature and causes of pollution and to discuss regulations governing pollution in Ireland and the European Union. 2. To show a detailed understanding of the design methodologies for selected physical, chemical and biological abatement technologies for effluent streams of relevance to the chemical and allied industries and to recommend effective treatment processes for such effluents. 3. To apply quantitative principles to determine the impact of pollution in selected systems e.g. Streeter-Phelps model for oxygen depletion in rivers and streams 4. To demonstrate an appreciation for the planning process and the environmental licensing of major industrial and municipal developments..
