Module Coordinator:
Professor Niall English
Trimester:
Autumn
Mode of Delivery:
On Campus
Internship Module:

How will I be graded?
Letter grades

Curricular information is subject to change.

This module will build on previous introductions to the thermodynamics of multi-component systems with particular emphasis on phase equilibrium relevant to chemical and bioprocess engineering. The module will, in particular, build on the fundamentals of thermodynamics introduced in module CHEN20030.

Through lectures and assignments, this module will present the theory and practice of thermodynamics as it influences chemical and bioprocess engineering process design, modelling and analysis.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

Estimate solubility of gases and solids in liquids;
Construct binary phase equilibrium diagrams for a range of solvents using non-ideal thermodynamics;
Analyse liquid-liquid equilibrium systems;
Analyse reaction schemes to determine equilibrium constants and reaction conversions;
Use thermodynamic software tools and conduct simulations of flash operations available in commercial software packages.
Demonstrate an understanding of the role of thermodynamics in safe and effective process design
