CELB20060 Principles of Cell & Molecular Biology

Academic Year 2021/2022

The discipline of cell biology bridges study of complex multi-cellular organisms with the study of individual molecules, and as such is fundamental to basic biology, environmental biology, bio-nanotechnologies, and biomedical science. This module builds on basic principles of cell and molecular biology to provide a greater depth of understanding of cellular events and processes, considers their wider importance to the life sciences, and how their dysfunction can result in disease and cancer. This module will explore the impact of a wide range of model organisms, gene manipulation technologies, RNA interference, bioimaging modalities, biochemical and functional genomic/proteomic techniques on cell biology. A series of lectures and workshops will inform students about how these techniques have advanced our knowledge of processes such as cell division, cell signalling, cell motility and intracellular transport, and in turn how this helps us understand disease and cancer biology. This module will provide the framework for careers in the biomedical and life sciences.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will have a fundamental knowledge of cell and molecular biology. Additionally, the student will have a thorough appreciation of the range of techniques that can be applied in cell and molecular biology. This understanding will facilitate the student’s appreciation of cell biology methods to biological research, and the impact of this field in understanding disease, e.g., cancer, and developing treatments.
