This module is worth 15 credits and is required for the BA in Creative and Cultural Industries programme.

It is the culminating individual capstone project for CCI students, demonstrating their capacity to initiate and realise a major creative and research project, showcasing their knowledge, skills, and abilities. It is an opportunity to take ownership of learning, and hone creative voice and ambitions. Final projects will demonstrate a refined understanding of the context of the creative and cultural industries; will anticipate audiences for the work; and critically reflect on their own emerging role as a creative professional in relation to the political, economic, social, cultural, artistic and technological trends and factors that influence the field as a whole.

The final form of capstone projects will be diverse, and may take the form of written work, events, digital projects, film/screen-based projects, etc. The final project is also an opportunity to demonstrate to future employers or collaborators the student's skills and abilities.

Selecting from one of three strands -- research dissertation; creative project based on UCD Collections; or creative project (open) -- students will be assigned an individual supervisor, and work to develop their project proposals developed in the autumn trimester (as part of CCI30030 - Research as Creative Thinking). All projects will involve some element of critical writing, appropriate in proportion to the proposed final deliverable project.

The majority of student hours will be spent engaged in individual research and development. Student work will be presented during a final series of group sessions that will include external industry participation; and as a final completed project.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, students will demonstrate their ability to:
- Plan, manage, and execute a significant individual research and/or creative project of their own devising
- Integrate and apply appropriate research methods to their chosen topic or project
- Synthesise learning and critical knowledge built up throughout their studies of creative and cultural industries at UCD
- Situate their own creative practice within the broader field of professional practice in CCI
- Communicate and summarise their project to an external audience
- Effectively deliver a coherent, original, and imaginative piece of work.

Further SDGs explored within this module if relevant are listed below. A scale of 1 - 5 indicates the extent to which the SDG is covered.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
An introductory class session will review the outline and structure of the Capstone. The majority of this module will involve individual and independent research and creative development work. Students will meet regularly with their supervisors to review individual work and discuss progress.

During the final three weeks of term, students will individually present their work-in-progress to one another and a panel of industry professionals, who will provide feedback and coaching, in advance of final project submission.

As this project seeks to demonstrate students' creative abilities and unique individual voice, the use of AI runs counter to these objectives, and should not be used in its writing or final execution.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will receive oral feedback from individual supervisor on work drafts, based on agreed submission schedule. Individual presentations during the final three weeks of class will receive oral feedback from industry experts, and written feedback from the module coordinator, communicated via Brightspace. Final projects will be assessed jointly by the CCI team and receive individual feedback, communicated via Brightspace.
