CCI10020 Introducing Management

Academic Year 2024/2025

*** Not available in the academic year indicated above ***

In this module we will explore the concept of ‘management’ and how and why it is central to the creative and cultural industries. Management in the creative sector is very often about people because we work with and through people to bring projects to fruition. In this module we will spend some time looking at and understanding our own behaviour. We will also explore how we manage and get along with other people, and at strategies for getting things done.

This module is designed to introduce you to ideas about management but it will be much more interesting (for everyone) if you come to class prepared to share your experiences of managing and being managed (everyone has a story). Our class time will include some input from me (lectures); class discussion based on assigned readings; and presentations and small group work. Slides will be available on Brightspace before class each week and I will expect you to prepare the assigned readings and be ready to discuss them with your colleagues in class.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Classes will have a mix of lecture, small group discussion, class presentation on assigned readings and will be designed to be interactive and conversational. Class slides will be provided (in multiple formats) on Brightspace in advance of class.

I will expect you to have the assigned readings read for that day completed in advance of class and to be ready to discuss these/present these in class.

A high degree of participation will be required by students particularly in the group assignment. This will require independent research and the completion of a group creative project
