Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The dissertation demands a substantial amount of independent work to conceive, research, produce, and edit the final product. That being said, students will be assigned a supervisor with appropriate expertise in their chosen field, and will receive structured support over the trimester. In this sense, students will learn to strike a balance between task-based and reflective modes of learning. Students will meet with their supervisor early in the trimester to establish expectations in terms of meetings and draft-reading. Students are expected to take responsibility for proceding with their research and to be proactive in collecting and analysing relevant data. Regular meetings with a supervisor will provide guidance on approaches, suggested reading, development of arguments, and feedback on drafts delivered according to an agreed schedule. There are also a number of seminars during the trimester that provide an opportunity to meet with peers and the module coordinator in a supportive environment.
