BSEN40830 Scientific Writing Workshop

Academic Year 2023/2024

Writing effective scientific papers is one of the most important components of academic success! This workshop will teach PhD students to become more effective writers through lectures, in-class exercises, class discussions and detailed instructor feedback on the assignment. Topics include: principles of good writing, the format of a scientific manuscript, peer review, grant application writing, and writing for conferences. Students will be assigned to small groups based on their research background, for discussion and doing exercises in class, and accomplishing assignments.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to: (1) identify and correct the most common and stylistic errors; (2) understand the principles of effective writing; (3) write a structured and coherent academic text; (4) understand the publication procedure (as author and reviewer) to improve a scientific document; (5) gain knowledge of the key elements of the successful grant application.
