Students will undertake a project involving experimentation, analysis or design. The results of this project will be presented in a formal mini thesis. Students will develop the skills required to manage and organise a major project. They will appraise and assess existing theories and present the findings and conclusions of their work both verbally and in a formal report. The students will write a short paper on their research for publication in our internal annual research report.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module students will have the ability to:
- describe the scientific, mathematical and engineering principles relevant to the thesis;
- conduct a technical literature review;
- identify specific research objectives and formulate a research plan;
- design an appropriate engineering solution to address the thesis objectives;
- implement solutions through analysis, simulation and/or experimentation;
- analyse results, discuss critically and draw appropriate conclusions;
- manage the execution of an engineering thesis in a limited time;
- collaborate with supervisor, co-workers and/or support staff to achieve a technical solution ;
- collaborate with supervisor, co-workers and/or support staff to analyse health safety and ethical aspects of the project and prepare suitable risk assessment for proposed works;
- present the research thesis and results to both specialist and non-specialist audiences through written technical reports and oral presentation;
- engage with and observe applicable ethical considerations relating to their thesis content, personal conduct and the delivery of thesis components.

Indicative Module Content:

This is experiential learning module with extensive laboratory or design element. The scheduling of specific tasks will be done in conjunction with designated supervisor

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Each student will have a thesis supervisor from the academic staff of the school. The supervisor will direct the project as appropriate. The student should meet with the supervisor on a regular basis for advice and direction.
