BSEN40590 Unit Ops for Bioprocess Eng

Academic Year 2023/2024

In this module, you will study the engineering sciences pertaining to key unit operations used in the food and bioprocessing industries, particularly those related to separation processes, such as sedimentation, centrifugation, distillation, membrane separation, liquid-liquid extraction and evaporation. Advanced mass and energy-balance principles that govern the design and operation of these processing units will be covered. Graphical and numerical methods will be used to solve advanced material and energy balance calculations in the food system. Finally, microalgae biorefinery will be introduced as a case example to illustrate unit operations in a novel food production system. The module will involve laboratory experience in growing and processing microalgae biomass.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the module, students should be able to:
- Learning Outcome 1 (LO1): Describe the operating principles and engineering sciences associated with critical unit operations in the food and bioprocessing industries, specifically those related to separation processes, such as sedimentation, centrifugation, distillation, membrane separation, liquid-liquid extraction and evaporation.
- LO2: Apply the principles of mass and energy balances to analyse and design specific unit operations employed in the food and bioprocessing industries.
- LO3: Use graphical and numerical methods to solve advanced material and energy balance calculations for integrated food and bioprocessing systems.
- LO4: Apply the engineering sciences learned on the unit operations to the analysis and design of a microalgae biorefinery system (as a case study of novel food system) and perform basic experiments in microalgae cultivation and processing.
