BSEN30510 Professional Work Experience

Academic Year 2022/2023

Students are expected to gain appropriate experience for a period of at least 16 weeks at an approved workplace with suitable enterprises. The workplace may be a suitable farm, agribusiness organization or IT organization. Overseas placements are also permitted. The PWE programme of each student must be approved in advance by the module coordinator. Students must familiarise themselves with and abide by the regulations for PWE as set out by the Agricultural Sciences Programme Board. For each placement, a host contract must be completed, signed by the host and received by UCD, before the placement will be deemed to have commenced by UCD. Furthermore, placements (and parts thereof) which have been completed in the absence of an appropriately completed host contract will not be accepted. The placement provider will nominate a sponsor within the organisation to oversee the placement. A programme of work will be agreed between the academic supervisor and the sponsor, to ensure that students can meet the learning outcomes associated with this module using the opportunities that are available during the scheduled period of placement. The supervisor will maintain contact with the student, and the student's sponsor, throughout the work placement period. Assessment of the module involves a diary, an oral examination, and final reports from both the student and the sponsor. Failure to meet the learning outcomes associated with this module represents grounds for failure. Remediation of failure will be discussed with the module co-ordinator. All aspects of the placement will be managed in accordance with the Agricultural Sciences Programme PWE regulations and with the UCD policy document 'Work Placement / Practice Experience Guidelines & Good Practice', 12th April 2007, Version 1.5 or later.

On completion of this module students should have acquired:
• knowledge and understanding of the functions and responsibilities of key elements of the organisation in which they worked;
• skills in applying academic learning in the workplace, which can vary with the nature of the work placement;
• an appreciation of safety in the workplace;
• skills in working in unfamiliar situations;
• communication and interpersonal skills;
• skills in working effectively with others including with their boss or clients;
• skills in acting professionally and taking responsibility for demanding tasks;
• self discipline in applying themselves to the required tasks and managing their time effectively;
• some ideas on what they would like to do after they get their degree;
• a critical reflective understanding of their experience in the workplace.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is about learning in the workplace. This can vary a lot depending on the specific placement. Consequently students should direct their own learning in conjunction with their company supervisor. The student should keep a diary that summarizes what they are learning as they go along and also write up a report at the end.
