On completion of this module students should have acquired:
• knowledge and understanding of basic principles of energy, including heat, work, potential energy, kinetic energy;
• knowledge and understanding of the laws of thermodynamics;
• knowledge and understanding of the use of units and dimensions related to energy;
• knowledge and understanding of forces, both external and internal, including compression, tension, bending and shear;
• knowledge and understanding of moments and their use;
• knowledge and understanding of the concept of equilibrium in structures;
• skills in analysing simple energy-related problems using the laws of thermodynamics and other principles mentioned above;
• skills in the use of units in equations and converting units;
• skills in analysing simple structural problems using the principles mentioned above;
• knowledge and understanding of the Python programming language for solving engineering problems;
• programming skills to solve engineering problems.

Learning Recommendations:Prior knowledge of Leaving Cert Physics or any level 1 Physics module would be beneficial to students attending this module. Some ability to program in Python required.
