This module introduces the students to the fundamental principles of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering including its practicalities and ethical related issues. First, students will acquire the fundamentals of tissue biology and mechanobiology of tissue structure and function as well as the optimal choice of a model system from animal models to organoids. Then they will learn about the different options from medical implants to 3D bioprinting tissues.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Origin of cellular and tissue structure and function, self-renewal and differentiation, stem cells (e.g. iPSCs), totipotency-pluripotency-unipotency, 3D bioprinting, tissue engineering in practice, implanted devices, functional biomaterials, challenges in ethics, good manufacturing practices and potential applications.
The aim is to give the students a clear understanding of regenerative medicine and the role of tissue engineering in realising the commercial potential.
