Curricular information is subject to change.

This module will introduce students to the fundamental practical skills needed to complete degree subjects in Biomolecular and Biomedical Sciences, and in related disciplines. Students will learn about basic liquid handling, calculations and data analysis, spectrophotometry, basic molecular biological techniques (DNA isolation, cloning), fractionation techniques, enzyme assays, and membrane transport assays.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to: 1. Perform basic calculations to determine correct weight, molarity, etc.; 2. Analyse data using computer software packages (e.g. Excel); 3. Independently prepare solutions, buffers, etc.; 4. Perform basic assays; 5. Manipulate DNA. 6. Have a comprehension of the applications of these techniques to research and analysis in the biomolecular sciences.

Indicative Module Content:

The practical classes are based on the topics described above.
