Curricular information is subject to change.

This module is designed to develop participants’ creative problem-solving skills in workplace contexts that require both originality and utility. Participants will develop their ability to organise and lead for creative solutions, and to explore their own creative solutions to problems ranging from internal change and process improvements, to creation of new products and development of new markets.

The module is centred around creativity related topics, with a focus on the individual and group levels, exploring the biological, psychological, organisational and social conditions behind the creation of original and useful ideas, products and processes. We will also cover topics in innovation, which is concerned with how organisations use creativity in order to turn it into a sustained competitive advantage that creates a change in how things are done in organisations, including barriers and conditions for turning creative ideas into innovation and spreading innovation across different organisational units.

Creative thinking skills can improve students' success in the classroom, in their daily lives and in their careers. Even more importantly, developing a playful and creative attitude towards life will make you a happier and healthier person. CPS is a highly interactive and experiential module, which is designed to enhance both your professional and personal creative skills and to develop your capacity to be more creative and innovative in your work as well as outside it. This is an invitation to learn to approach matters differently and to do so combining an open mind with critical thinking.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

The CPS module aims for students to:

1. Promote a deeper understanding of the theories and organisational studies of creativity and innovation.
2. Encourage you to approach problems in a creative and innovative way.
3. Illustrate the role and effect of creativity and innovation across domains (business, arts, science) and in different areas of life (education, work, personal lives).
4. Gain understanding and ability to identify which factors encourage or inhibit creativity and innovation in individuals, groups and organisations.
5. Develop ability to apply the learned principles and to make the acquired knowledge meaningful and relevant for your own life and for your interactions in organisations. These include becoming self- and other-aware and learning how to apply creative approaches to all areas of your life.
6. Learn how to be more playful, free and flexible in your approach to yourself, to others and to all matters in the world; to learn how you can be a happier human.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
A variety of teaching methods designed to stimulate class participation and interaction with course content will be used. The methodology includes formal lectures, class discussion, case studies, guest lectures and video clips. A unique feature of this class will be the use of exercises related to selected concepts, engaging students in playful activities and seemingly strange exercises, which, in combination with unique guest lectures, aim to facilitate you in a more free and flexible approach to yourself and the world around you.

The teaching philosophy in this module is to rely heavily on a self-learning process aided by on-going class discussions. In other words, students need to prepare well for each class by reading the required material in advance and participate fully in class discussions. As an instructor, I believe in engaging students as much as possible, both intellectually and emotionally. Thus, in this module you can expect to laugh, be puzzled and, maybe, even frustrated. It’s all part of the learning experience and it’s all good for you.

Role of the Teacher
To achieve the learning objectives of the module, I will stimulate and guide discussion, ask questions that probe the depth of your understanding of issues, review theoretical concepts and present empirical studies at the cutting-edge of our knowledge of creativity and innovation and encourage participants to present and consider different points of view.

Role of Participants/Students
To achieve the learning objectives of the module, participants will thoroughly prepare and participate fully in all classes, noting the following three points:
1. Attendance: It is essential that you attend every class.
2. Preparation: It is essential that you read all assigned material thoroughly enough to, at minimum, summarise and explain the main points when called upon in class.
3. Participation: Effective participation in class involves using the knowledge and opinions generated from preparatory readings and exercises to constructively comment, question, argue, and analyse points raised by the teacher and others in class. It also involves full engagement and commitment to class exercises.
