BMGT43350 Behavioral Strategy and Leadership

Conventional strategy tends to be conceptualised as a rational, intentional activity that is rooted in analysis and formal planning. The subject domain elevates analytical skills leading some to suggest that in so doing, it has dehumanized management. This module seeks to closely examine this understanding and its assumptions and then consider alternative ways of understanding/conceptualising agency. Specifically, it explores the potential relevance and influence of scholarship within the broader social sciences on strategic management, theory and practice. By examining a range of assumptions about human cognition, emotion and social interaction, we will endeavour to ground strategy in different, perhaps more realistic, assumptions about people and organising. The overall aim is to explore what a more humanized conceptualisation of strategy implies for managers/leaders and the kinds of skills that managers need to develop if they are to become more effective.

Learning Outcomes:

On completing this module you will be expected to:

- Be able to trace and critically analyse how strategy is typically conceptualised and what this means for managers and their required skill sets.
- Articulate why there have been repeated calls to incorporate “behaviour” into strategy research and teaching.
- Be able to explain the ways in which behavioural considerations go to the heart of strategising processes.
- Be able to competently explore the kinds of management/leadership practices and skills needed when attempting to introduce and promote strategic change in an organisation.
