Organizations increasingly use teams to get work done at all levels, but often teams are not managed effectively. This module examines the research and experience of group work to establish: when teams are the right choice (and when they are not), how to be an effective team member and leader, and how to diagnose and solve common team problems. As such, this course will introduce you to the important theories, concepts and frameworks that can be used to successfully identify the threats and opportunities teams face and improve team outcomes. It will also provide opportunities for you to design effective teams. Throughout the term, this module will be comprised of interactive discussions and group work in order to highlight key applications of team research.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

1. Apply concepts, theories and research on team effectiveness to critically analyze group processes and outcomes;
2. Gain advanced first-hand experience and build teamwork skills by a) participating in in-class team exercises, b) working on a team project, and c) simultaneously examining those team experiences using module concepts; and
3. Explore ways in which team participants can directly influence their peers and the team’s work – both positively and negatively.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Much of the learning that occurs in the course will involve exercises, simulations, and cases that draw on students’ current experiences in the class as well as their previous experiences in teams and organizations outside of Quinn. The module has three key features:

1. Experiential learning: In each session teams will be given a new challenge pertaining to a key aspect of building, maintaining, and designing teams.

2. Feedback: The professor will lead the teams in a debrief that involves analyzing their own performance. Benchmark performance will also be provided.

3. Applied learning: Each session the professor will introduce a theory or model and students will be encouraged to apply the model to the analysis of their own team performance in class and to their consulting client.
