The module considers the operational and strategic challenges involved in operating a business in a global environment. Business operations are at the heart of designing, producing and delivering innovative products and services through sustainable supply chains. In the globalised economy it is increasingly difficult to design and manage sustainable solutions which balance the social, environmental and economic impacts of the operations. This module provides a framework to examine end-to-end supply chains from product and service innovation through to customer service. It combines latest thinking on global business practice with an applied approach to finding practical solutions to current business problems.
Topics covered include supply network design, lean/agile supply chains, purchasing and supply management, inventory management, outsourcing, transport and logistics and sustainability.

The module is taught using self-regulated learning. Peer review and assessment play a significant role in developing lifelong learning skills.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to
• Critically analyse the operational and strategic challenges involved in managing a global business
• Identify the key strategic decisions involved in developing and implementing sustainable supply chain solutions for a global business
• Develop and effectively communicate a strategic plan to enhance global business performance through operations and supply chain excellence
• Analyse and provide critical feedback on peer’s work, and effectively analyse their own work

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback from the first assessment will be provided online to each student, and feeds into the work on the group assessment. In the group project, formative assessment is carried out as well as peer assessment at various stages of the project.

There is no set text for this module. Any of the texts in the library that cover Operations, Process Management and Supply Chain Management will be useful in covering this module. Two books that I find useful are:

Operations and Process Management: Principles and Practice for Strategic Impact 5th edition by Nigel Slack & Alistair Brandon-Jones, Pearson
The book has gone into its 6th edition but I have the 5th edition on my bookshelf. This is an excellent text covering operations and process management. There are a number of copies in the library. The main difference in the various editions is the examples so any edition is good!

Operations Management: Sustainability and Supply Chain Management by Heizer, Jay H; Render, Barry, Pearson
This book is a tome and it has a US slant.

There is no requirement to read these texts, let alone buy them. I am listing two texts that I have found useful for Process Management (Slack) and Supply Chain (Heizer et al.)
