This module is aimed at students on the Diploma in Business Studies who are new to university learning or have been out of education for an extended period of time. This is a skills-based module with an emphasis on building up your academic skills in areas like time management, strategic reading, and academic writing conventions. Ultimately the module equips you with the skills to effectively tackle assignments at University. This is a self-paced online module. You are required to review all eight topics as part of the module requirements.

Learning Outcomes:

1) Effectively plan and organise your study time
2) Demonstrate strategic note-taking skills and reading techniques; including understanding academic texts such as textbooks and journals.
3) Apply the key principles of planning, structuring, and writing an academic assignment
4) Find and evaluate your sources for academic assignments
5) Reference and cite according to UCD Harvard Referencing Style

Indicative Module Content:

There is no exam for this module and the assessment is continuous. You will undertake a number of online activities in group discussions as well as an individual written assignment. Grading is based on whether you have acquired a specific skill or not and . We will cover the following topics on the module:

2) Planning and organising your study
3) Reading
4) Note-taking
5) Essay Writing
6) Sourcing and Evaluating Information
7) Referencing Guidelines
8) Memory and Exam Techniques

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is a blended format module consisting of a self-paced Brightspace module interspersed with face to face classes . Students will attend classes and have the opportunity to engage in active learning. Classes will include discussion and group work to engage with the module content.
Harvard Referencing is required for all assignment submissions
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is allowed for in-class and asynchronous student activites set by your module coordinator. Generative AI is not permitted for assignment writing but may be used as part of the research process.
