The aim of this career development module is equip you with the skills you will require to pursue a career in biochemical and biomedical science. It is therefore especially relevant if you intend to study for an MSc or for a Ph.D. The module focuses on giving the skills required to publish your research either as a scientific publication or as a poster at a scientific meeting. Researchers have to apply for funding for their research and in some cases for their own salaries. Therefore we hope to give you the skills required to apply for research funding. Researchers also need to protect any research results which have commercial potential and so you will be introduced to the procedures required for obtaining patents. Scientists are required to conform to a high standard of ethics in their work and you will be made aware of these requirements especially with regard to scientific publications.

Areas dealt with module include CV and cover letter production, project presentations, scientific paper writing, small grant writing, Ethics in Science, IP and Innovation, Data Manipulations, graphics, oral exams etc.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to:-
Have gained experience in giving talks, taking oral exams, producing CVs, having interviews and applying for research positions.
Write a small grant proposal
Prepare a scientific publication
Prepare figures for publication
Prepare a poster for presentation at a scientific meeting.
Know how to protect IP
Be aware of ethical standards in scientific publishing

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Problem-based learning and case-based learning will be used throughout the module. Creative writing skills will also be improved due to activities in this module.

This is a continuous assessment module. Students will have ample opportunity to discuss their work with the PIs involved in this module. Several examples and activities related to assessments are discussed throughout the module.
