BDIC3018J Electromagnetics 2

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module aims to develop an understanding of electromagnetic waves with emphasis on:
(1) the vector calculus of electromagnetic theory
(2) the physical basis and predictions of this theory, and
(3) engineering application and implications of the results.
The module is intermediate or advanced level.
Topics include:
- Faraday's and Ampere's laws
- Vector fields and Poynting fields
- Maxwell's Equations (physical basis and vector calculus formalism)
- Transverse electromagnetic wave, polarization, velocity
- The physical engineering implications, e.g. losses in media, impedance matching, back reflections, phase and group velocity, dispersion
- Antennas including theory and operation of simple antenna examples
- Radio environment propagation
- Bridge the gap between theory and the simplified radio propagation models used for wireless transceiver design and analysis.
