This module is a broad introduction to architectural professional practice at post-graduate level, and includes the subjects of: the architectural profession & professionalism; ethics and codes of conduct; registration & regulation of architects; forms of practice, entrepreneurship and professional relationships; the context of the construction industry in Ireland; current and future issues for the architectural profession; dealing with clients, appointments and architectural services; professional responsibility and liability; communication, documentation and dispute resolution; management and financial management.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this Module the student should be able to
-Demonstrate an understanding of the historical, social, environmental, legislative and economic context in which the built environment is procured.
-Demonstrate an understanding of broader issues of climate change, social and ethical challenges, technological innovation and sustainable development, as they relate to the future directions of architectural practice.
-Demonstrate an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a professional architect within these contexts.
-Demonstrate an ability to identify the architect's role, responsibilities and potential liabilities in the context of providing a professional service and operating a business.
-Demonstrate an ability to advise and represent a client, to clearly identify the service to be provided and to formalise the appointment.
-Demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of the effective operation and management of an architectural practice.
-Demonstrate an ability to research a selected subject and to produce a professional written document.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered on campus or online/blended in the Spring Trimester. Lecture recordings, learning material and readings will be available to students for flexible learning, supported by live lectures over four days of the trimester.
