ARCT30130 Framework for Practice

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module is divided into three components.
1. Intelligent Tectonics (5 weeks):
This module provides a theoretical and technical grounding in the use of building information modelling (BIM) in the architectural design process.

2. The Conservation Conundrum (3 weeks):
Conservation frequently seems to act against construction and thus against architecture. Yet this position is now established as a modern and ethical response to the current issues of sustainability, equality and economic probity. Through the use of case studies the lecture will explore the evolution of conservation thought and practice in Ireland and internationally and how this impacts upon the modern architect.

3. Urban Design (2 weeks):
This component explores the theoretical and practical use of Urban Design.

4. The Reflective Practitioner (2 weeks):
This component explores aspects of practice today and encourages critical reflection on such topics as:
The Uses of Professions; Entering Practice; Defining Reflective Practice;

Learning Outcomes:

What will I learn?
1. Intelligent Tectonics:
On completion of this module students should be able to create intelligent building models , extract information and drawings from these models and demonstrate a critical understanding of the appropriate use of building information modelling in the design process.

2. The Conservation Conundrum:
An introduction to understanding how and why conservation thought and practice developed in Ireland and internationally. How does it impact upon the practice of architecture?

3. Introduction to Urban Design
Understanding the theoretical and practical use of Urban Design in Ireland and elsewhere and how this impacts upon modern environments and the profession.

4. The role of an Architect in today's Building Economy
Demonstrate awareness of the formation and uses of the profession and understand outline building economics and liability.
