Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate confidence and understanding to be able to choose appropriate construction methods for a given challenge.
Demonstrate advanced theoretical and conceptual knowledge of building construction, structural systems and materials.
Demonstrate the ability to design and develop construction solutions for buildings based on an understanding of material properties, resource availability, heat and moisture performance among other factors.
Understand and participate in peer discussion and debates related to building construction, design and performance.
Indicative Module Content:
Over the course of twelve weeks the module will investigate building construction, with particular emphasis on the material properties and construction systems of masonry and timber. Concrete and steel will also be focused on in later weeks of the semester. The lectures and technology studio classes will bring the student through the fundamentals of construction beginning with openings and progressing through walls, ground, floors, roofs and cladding.
