Curricular information is subject to change.

This module introduces Architectural Technologies in their broadest sense including principles and applications in order to provide a foundation for an understanding of the construction methods and performance of a building at a domestic scale. The module will examine in detail the building envelope, focussing on the principles of construction, through a formal lecture series complemented by visits to the Building Laboratory and exercises in Technology Studio. Technology Studio comprises structured projects including technical drawings, analytical models, sketching, simple surveying methods and generic material studies, intended to emphasise the importance of architectural technologies in the creative process of marking architecture.

Technology Studio works closely with Design Studio (Architectural Design II ARCT10020) and many of the exercises will require students to consider and develop aspects of their work in Design Studio. The mark in Technology Studio contributes 12% to the overall mark in Design Studio.

50% of the overall grade for this module will be allocated to Technology Studio, 40% of the overall grade will be allocated to a written examination at the end of the trimester and 10% for the peer review exercise during the trimester. The Technology Studio component must be passed. An in-module resit will be offered for Technology Studio and for the Written Examination.
