This module introduces the student to the relationship between the built and natural environments in the context of sustainability, health and well-being. It approaches the subject through theory and analysis with application. The module considers architecture in a broad environmental context with an emphasis on sustainability and the health of the environment and society. Course topics include: environmental concepts, natural resources, health and comfort, climate, wind and shelter, shading and solar access. The module is delivered through lectures and is supported by research in the form of study projects.

Learning Outcomes:

The objective of this course is to introduce the student to a broader environmental context for architecture. On completion of this module students should be able to:
Demonstrate a broad understanding of the relationship between the environment, building and society.
Describe and explain the relationship between climate and the environmental impact of design and construction.
Demonstrate the ability to utilise analysis techniques to inform and interpret design decisions.

Indicative Module Content:

The module reviews current environmental topic relevant to architecture and society in general. It considers human factors that drive the environmental impact of building and reviews methods of analysis that support energy conscious site design.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is mainly delivered through lectures and project work. Students undertake two projects that are designed to develop subject-relevant research skills and which help to inform design as practiced in studio modules.
