ARCH41410 Presenting & Managing Heritage

This module aims to engage with the key issues in the management and presentation of archaeological, historic and cultural landscapes in Ireland and internationally. It will also consider key issues in biodiversity conservation and the interlinkages between culture and nature. The module will have two complementary components. The module comprises five field-trips that will explore the range of cultural, natural, intangible and movable heritage assets in Ireland elucidating their different management, conservation and presentation challenges. During the field-trips students will have the opportunity to engage with heritage managers at the sites visited; and consider questions of sustainability, tourism, threats, capacity, obligations and interpretation and communication. The field-trips will be complemented by seminars and discussions to explore the issues raised and examine different perspectives and outlooks.

The proposed dates for fieldtrips are: 2nd Feb (full day), 16th Feb (1/2 day), 1st March (full day), 22nd March, (full day) 12th April (1/2 day), Each site will have a visitor centre and/or access to toilets. We are visiting at least two landscapes which will involve a lot of walking but we will be following well maintained pathways (not always paved) and easy terrain, mostly flat with small inclines. Students are advised to be prepared for the weather and to bring suitable coats and footwear as needed. Also, it is advised to bring drinks, snacks and packed lunches as access to cafes is not guarenteed. Further details will be given in class in advance of each trip. Any students with health or access concerns should discuss this with the module coordinator as soon as possible

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate critical appraisal of the challenges faced in managing heritage through practical engagement with heritage assets.
2. Evaluate and critically differentiate roles and positions of stakeholders in heritage management.
3. Analyse necessary conditions for authentic conservation of monuments, sites, landscapes and the natural environment.
4. Identify interpretive potential of heritage sites.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is built around a series of case study sites. For each case study site we will have on-site discussion with the site managers or curators and a class discussion afterwards accompanied by student presentations and reflections.
