ARCH41240 Heritage Management Challenges

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module will introduce key challenges faced by cultural and natural heritage. We will critically evaluate the impacts of the following issues: Development and resource use, boundaries and buffer zones, governance and ownership, climate change, tourism and exploitation, conflict and looting. We will also consider constraints around capacity, finances and human resources as limiting factors to successful management of heritage sites. We will outline the methods and structure of heritage risk assessment considering a range of cultural and natural cumulative and catastrophic threats to cultural and natural heritage sites.
To balance these threats, we will finish by exploring a success stories that illustrate how these threats can be successfully overcome.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Define endangered heritage
2. Apply a risk assessment protocol considering cumulative and catastrophic threats to heritage
3. Understand the structure and components of Environmental Impact Assessment
4. Discuss the impacts and possible solutions to anthropogenic and natural threats to heritage sites
5. Enhance skills to create and effectively communicate topical heritage issues to a wide audience using visual aids.
