ARCH40950 Conservation Strategies

Academic Year 2021/2022

This module provides scope to develop knowledge gained in the first year introductory modules by examining conservation strategies used in cultural and natural World Heritage Conservation. It will explore conservation of built environments and approaches to defining, conserving and presenting monuments, sites and landscapes. In the context of natural heritage it will investigate in-situ and ex-situ approaches to practical wildlife conservation, the selection, design and management of protected areas and anthropogenic effects on biodiversity conservation.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
• Demonstrate a critical understanding of conservation tools and strategies used in conserving World Heritage properties;
• Understand key conservation concepts, principles and techniques in conserving cultural heritage;
• Develop skills in identifying, protecting and conserving cultural significance of monuments, sites and landscapes.
• Recognise the complementary roles of in-situ and ex-situ conservation actions and critical issues in reintroduction programmes.
• Understand the science behind determining the best strategies for protecting threatened species and designing effective protected areas.
