ANSC40340 Commun & Agri-Innovation

This module is for students taking the MSc/Diploma/Certificate in Animal Science. Content will also be made available as part of structured PhD programmes.

It is designed for graduates who want to develop their communications skills as well as knowledge of the processes in developing new solutions in agriculture. There is an urgent need to foster increased innovation in the Agri sector to address the challenges we face.

The online lectures and materials will give students the necessary foundation in professional development skills, help them develop and tailor their communication skills, foster improved professional development and appreciate the opportunities and challenges involved in driving innovations within the sector.

The module begins with a problem statement to address an issue of interest and the subsequent business canvas will set out a plan to address this problem. in the final lecture, students will present their business plan to peers and associated staff.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. Explain the skills acquired in terms of professional development.

2. Appreciate the importance of communication skills in terms of style, content and delivery.

3. Understand ways in which communication can be used to drive behavioral change.

4. Demonstrate how to construct a problem statement.

5. Understand the role of research in the discovery of new solutions.

6. Appreciate the steps involved in moving from a concept to new solutions.

7. Illustrate the critical elements involved in setting up a business using the business model canvas.

8. Demonstrate confidence in solution pitching and giving and receiving constructive criticism.

Indicative Module Content:

This module will consist of a blend of lectures from UCD staff and guest lecturers to develop the required competencies.

It is important to realize that successful completion of the assignment on this module require students to be present online at an agreed time in the final lecture to pitch their business plan to peers and associated staff.

This module will be delivered through the UCD VLE system and practical tutorials that will consist of:
