Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate improved ability in research literacy
2. Discuss the importance of research integrity
3. Critically evaluate literature in a relevant area of animal science, leading to the development of a research question, aims and testable hypothesis
4. Plan and design a viable, ethical and original research project using quantitative research methods.
5. Communicate this research proposal to peers.

Indicative Module Content:

Students will receive lectures on the following topics:
1. The Research Ecosystem
2. Research types, evidence pyramid and data independence
3. Scientific Literacy
4. Research Integrity
5. Research as a career (given by research active academic)

With guidance from the module coordinator and specialist academic in the chosen subject area, the student will also conduct a literature review to identify a knowledge gap in a chosen area and subsequently compose a research proposal to address that knowledge gap using a standardized template.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

This module will be delivered through the UCD VLE and practical tutorials that will consist of:
Active/task-based learning, peer and group work, critical writing, reflective learning, enquiry and problem-based learning, interactive tutorials. This module will focus on creating authentic pieces of critical writing in the shape of a literature review and a project proposal for funding. This will involve enquiry and problem-based learning, it will use peer and group work to provide feedback and this will in turn require reflective learning as the feedback is applied to improve the final work. Students will also develop critical analysis skills through the critique of sample papers.
