ANSC40040 Advanced Dairy Production

Academic Year 2021/2022

This module is designed to expand further on dairy production components included in Ruminant Animal Production (ANSC 30110) and in Principles of Animal Science (ANSC 20030), and to introduce new topics not addressed previously. A good knowledge of dairy production systems, comparable with that delivered in the above modules is a prerequisite. Topics selected usually include: factors affecting milk composition, intensive, high-input dairying systems, pasture based dairy production systems, the international competitiveness of milk production in Ireland and prospects for expansion of milk production. The new topics introduced include calf and heifer rearing and dairy production and the environment. Each student is expected to complete a group project, which is usually a detailed case study of a dairy farm involving a critical analysis (SWOT analysis) of the most important aspects of the dairy enterprise.
