ANSC30120 Non-ruminant Animal Production (Swine & Poultry)

This is an undergraduate module for students specialising in Animal Science/Animal Production. It consists of two sections dealing with swine (70%) and poultry production (30%). The two sections will deal with the following: The pig and poultry industry at farm, national and international level, current position and future trends. Principles of pig breeding, sow nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, boar nutrition and management, weaner and finisher pig nutrition, management and disease control. Costs and returns and factors affecting pig and poultry profitability, factors affecting pig and poultry meat quality will also be covered. Principles of broiler production, egg production and turkey production will be covered.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module the students should be able to: Outline the key facts about the relevant enterprises and industries and be able to describe the production systems. Explain systems of pig and poultry production in terms of the applications of key principles and concepts. Deconstruct each system of production into its component parts, and be able to evaluate the significance of the components and their interrelationships to current systems of production.Analyse systems of production from both biological/technical and financial perspectives, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and make recommendations for remedial action as appropriate.
