This module is designed for students in Animal Science/Animal and Crop Production. It builds on the material covered in Animal Nutrition I, focusing on quantitative aspects and introducing new topics. The course covers both ruminant and monogastric nutrition and includes the following areas:

Feed formulation for both ruminant and non-ruminant livestock.
Systems for the evaluation of energy and protein in feeds, as well as the nutrient requirements of animals.
Factors affecting the intake, metabolism, and utilization of nutrients in animals, and how these processes impact production efficiency and product quality.
The relationship between nutrition and environmental sustainability, emphasising sustainable feed sourcing, reducing waste, and minimising the environmental impact of livestock production.
Metabolic disorders and the role of nutrition in disease prevention.

This module ensures students gain a thorough understanding of optimising animal nutrition to improve productivity, maintain animal health, and support sustainable agricultural practices, thereby promoting the long-term viability of animal production systems.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to discuss in detail the concepts of nutrient supply and nutrient requirements. They will be able to integrate these concepts quantitatively to analyse the adequacy of existing diets for farm animals and to formulate new diets. Students will explain how voluntary intake is regulated in farm animals and discuss its implications for animal health and production efficiency.

Students will explain, at a metabolic level, the occurrence, prevention, and treatment of metabolic disorders in ruminants. They will be able to describe how the digestion and metabolism of nutrients impact the efficiency of production and product quality, providing a thorough understanding of the biological processes involved.

Additionally, students will explain how nutrition affects the output of animal excreta and outline strategies to minimize the environmental impact of animal production. They will be equipped to develop sustainable practices that enhance production efficiency while mitigating negative environmental effects.
