ANAT20060 Locomotor Biology

The structure and function of the human lower limb is examined in this module. The various contributory elements including bones, muscles, nerves and blood vessels are considered in detail as well as the relationship between these structural constituents and their functional interactions. In addition, the structure of the vertebral column, limb development and bone growth, fracture and repair will be covered. Understanding and predicting clinical outcomes resulting from damage to constituent elements of the lower limb will form an integral part of the module. This module forms part of the core curriculum for the MB BCh BAO degree in medicine.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Describe the topographical and surface anatomy of the lower limb.
2. Explain and evaluate the functions, relationships and interactions of the constituent elements including bones, muscles, nerves and blood vessels.
3. Discuss the mechanisms of bone growth, fracture and repair.
4. Describe limb development.
5. Describe the structure and function of the vertebral column and limb muscles in relation to posture and locomotion.
6. Appraise and evaluate the consequences to function of damage to the constituent elements of the lower limb

Gluteal region including neurovascular structures and relationships
Posterior compartment of the thigh & hip joint
Anterior compartment of the thigh
Medial compartment of the thigh & neurovascular structures and relationships in the anteromedial thigh
Sacral Plexus
Lumbar Pexus
Osteology of the leg
Knee Joint
Anterior & lateral compartments of the leg including neurovascular structures and relationships
Posterior compartment of the leg & neurovascular structures and relationships; Tibiofibular and
ankle joints
Foot: intrinsic muscles & neurovascular structures
Foot: joints and arches
Foot revision
Bone fracture and repair
Knee examination
Arterial supply and Venous and lymphatic drainage of lower limb
Posture & gait
