This course is designed to provide good general knowledge of the gross and microscopic structure, physiology and biochemistry of the central nervous system. How the brain and spinal cord co-ordinate the organism's interactions with the external environment is explained and control of the internal processes in the body is examined with emphasis on control of movement, processing of sensory information, and influence over other organ systems in response to needs of the organism. Emphasis will also be given to regions of the nervous system known to have a role in neurologic and psychiatric illness. This module forms part of the core curriculum for the MB BCh BAO degree in medicine.
