This module details the anatomical organisation of the trunk ( thorax, abdomen and pelvis)

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Following successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Describe the organisation of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis with reference to osteology, wall structure and viscera
2. Understand clinically important anatomical relations and spaces within the thorax, abdomen and pelvis,
3. Locate or determine on the body surface the position of organs and structures of the trunk
4. Recognise anatomical features in dissections, prosections and radiographic imaging.

Indicative Module Content:

Thorax: surface anatomy, osteology and respiratory muscles
The muscles, joints and movements of respiration
Lungs and pleura
Mediastinum: divisions and contents, great vessels
Heart and pericardium
Oral cavity and pharynx
Abdomen: surface anatomy and abdominal wall
Stomach and spleen
Small intestine
Liver, Gallbladder and Pancreas
Large intestine
Rectum, anus and ischioanal fossa
Pelvic floor, peritoneum, pelvic vessels, perineum
Urinary Tract
Female reproductive system
Male reproductive system
Imaging of the thorax and abdomen

Within 2 weeks of the Spotter Examinations students will be informed of their provisional component grade. General feedback to the class will be provided based on analysis of performance.
