This module focuses on the history and practices of photojournalism, from the late nineteenth century to the present. It considers the ways in which journalistic and documentary imagery have represented major social and political issues across the world, with particular attention to international topics such as war and conflict, immigration, climate change and environmental challenges, human rights and health. It examines how photojournalism evolved technologically and professionally, referencing the political economy of international news media. Most classes are seminars, focuses on analysis and discussion. There will also be several practice-based workshops involving guest photography practitioners.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will receive an understanding of the history and evolution of photojournalism as a news and documentary medium. They will develop a critical awareness of how photographic representation has shaped perceptions of major social and political issues and how it functions as a transnational medium in relation to international news media.
