Close reading and analysis of secondary sources are crucial skills to develop during the PhD process. PhD students in this module will take part in a directed reading group that meets four times a term, supervised by the Module Coordinator. Each meeting will be structured around discussion and evaluation of a different readings which have been chosen by students in the module; each reading group meeting will be led by the student who selected the reading for the week. Participants in the module will be exposed to a wide variety of literature from different sub-fields of Art History and Cultural Policy, broadening their disciplinary horizons.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the module, students will be expected to have:
-gained a deeper understanding of a range of art history and cultural policy approaches and methods
-developed their presentation and discussion skills
-developed their abilities to summarize and critique academic arguments

Indicative Module Content:

As the module is structured around readings chosen by the students, indicative content will change, but may include: methods in art history and cultural policy; new research horizons in art history and cultural policy; historiography; etc.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is discussion-based, and will allow students to develop their reading, critical thinking, presentation, and discussion skills through close analysis of primary and/or secondary texts. Students will take turns serving as discussion leaders, gaining experience at framing, focusing, and sustaining a critical discussion. Students will also develop their writing skills through a short reflective writing exercise in which they practice summarising and responding to readings and reflect on the importance of critical reading skills.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will provide feedback to each other during reading group meetings; the module coordinator will provide continuous assessment on student performance throughout the trimester, and will provide feedback on writing exercises within two weeks of submission.
