AH30240 Berlin: Museum Studies

Academic Year 2023/2024

This option module, open to all stage 3 and 4 art history students, involves a field trip over three nights/ four days to the city of Berlin in March 2024 (exact dates tbc). Berlin has one of the oldest and most comprehensive collections of museums, including art museums, in the world, as well as outstanding examples of nineteenth through contemporary architecture. This module will explore the history of these buildings and collections. Although some classes will take place on campus, most of the teaching take place on the field trip, with 10.00 am starts each morning in Berlin at pre-arranged meeting points in front of institutions and other buildings. Assessment will be geared to the trip. NB. students should be prepared to bear the costs of airfare and accommodation themselves (the School of Art History and Cultural Policy expects to give some assistance and advice in alleviating costs - further details will emerge in the autumn trimester). Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:1. Identify the major Berlin museums2. Describe and discuss their collections3. Describe and analyze the history of these collections4. Understand the interface between art and politics that shaped both the collections and the architecture within which they are housed5. Relate knowledge acquired in class to the history of the museum as an institution
