The tutorial module serves as a small-class adjunct to the lecture modules, and it is intended that the tutorials augment the material covered in lectures. Through class discussion, directed to reinforce and expand upon lecture topics, this module is intended to facilitate a deeper understanding of Western art from the late Middle Ages to the High Renaissance. At least one tutorial will be conducted in the National Gallery of Ireland.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this MODULE students should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the general timeline, and recognise and examine the main stylistic developments in the history of Western painting c1350-1500.
- Identify, compare and contrast the characteristics of the key artists, art movements & styles.
- Recognise and contextualise the works of key practitioners and their significance within the artist's career, the school or the art historical period.
- Possess an understanding of the broader social, historical & cultural background to the artworks and principal artistic developments.

The van Eycks & The Altarpiece of the Lamb
The Brancacci Chapel
Fra Angelico & San Marco, Florence
Story of the True Cross, San Francesco, Arezzo
The ‘High’ Renaissance
The Last Supper
The Sistine Chapel: the wall & ceiling paintings

This small class module requires a significant amount of class participation. Questions will be posed as a means of opening up discussion among the students to allow them to explore, question and develop the material covered in the lecture modules. Approaches may also involve group tasks.
